This historical overview from Kamera Books in England is intended as an introduction for the silent film novice, assisting their explorations into the art form.

The book would have benefited from a more knowledgeable editor who could have challenged some of Robb’s statements of fact and corrected several of his faux pas. Novice readers will benefit from countless other overviews that, at very least, make fewer erroneous statements.

Initial copies of the book came with a supplementary DVD-R (compiled by home video publisher Sunrise Silents) of representative exerpts from 27 silent era films, both short and feature films, which might help the reader acquaint themselves with silent stars (well-known and obscure), specific silent films, film genres and storytelling techniques.
